we do say good morning on this monday, everyone. we start on a tragic note, a tragedy indeed. one man remains missing. nine members of his family killed in a flash flood in arizona. >> such sad news. more thunderstorms and, therefore, more flash floods likely in the area today. >> you see the radar there, but here's the video from yesterday. the family swept away in the flood. they had gathered at a popular swimming hole and had no warning before the wall of water roared through the narrow canyon. abc's elizabeth hur with more. >> reporter: with crews in the air and search dogs on the ground, rescue and recovery operations stretching into day three in central arizona. >> our trail is blocked off because of this. >> reporter: this woman caught the frightening scene on her cell phone as a flash flood sent water, debris and mud rushing down a mountain into the river below. >> there's the son over there, and the mom is in the water. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say dozens of swimmers caught off

guard held on to whatever they could to stay alive. >> finally got rescuers on site. >> reporter: four people were rescued and flown to hospitals with hypothermia. >> one of the witnesses said he looked up and saw a wall of water coming toward him. >> reporter: that wall of water so powerful, authorities confirm so far at least nine people including two children were killed. >> i've been with the sheriff's office 13 years, and this is the worst flash flood accident we've had. >> when it rains it really pours, and not only that it knocks down trees. >> reporter: the floods triggered by torrential rains in the area pounding this waterfront restaurant and uprooting trees in nearby neighborhoods. and, unfortunately, for that same area and across arizona, the danger isn't over yet with new flash flood watches now in effect through this evening. adrienne and kendis. >> yeah, elizabeth, the national weather service just telling people to avoid the area moments ago.

thank you. we're going to move on right now and turning to president trump's slipping approval ratings, down to an all-time low six months into the job. >> as the president copes with a stalled health care bill and the russia probe, a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows just 36% of americans approve of his presidency. that's the lowest level at this point in 70 years of polling. abc's david wright has more. >> reporter: the abc news/"washington post" poll shows donald trump is off to the worst start of any president since polling began. americans have deep concerns about his competence and effectiveness. two-thirds don't trust him to negotiate with other world leaders. nearly half say the u.s. has grown weaker on the world stage on his watch. trump does have die-hard supporters. >> his supporters believe him, not you. >> reporter: but they're in the minority. trump pushed back, the

abc/"washington post" poll, even though almost 40% is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time. not true. abc's last poll before the election predicted the national results within two points showing hillary clinton winning the popular vote, in fact, the only other president to rate below 40% six months into his term was gerald ford after ford pardoned richard nixon for watergate. one major stumbling block for trump is russia. >> i have nothing to do with russia. i told you. >> reporter: six out of ten believe russia did try and influence the election, and what about that meeting last june when don junior, jared kushner and campaign chair paul manafort sat down with a russian lawyer whom they were told had dirt on hillary clinton. >> here you have now evidence in black and white that, yes, the campaign was encouraging the russians to give them dirt. >> reporter: the poll shows nearly two out of three americans agree that meeting was inappropriate.

he's tweeted before that in his view, any negative polls are fake news. david wright, abc news. >> now, on the bright side for president trump, the poll shows americans have a pretty low opinion of democrats too. only 37% say the party stands for something, and most say the party is just anti-trump. the latest republican plan to repeal and replace obamacare is on hold because a key vote will be missing. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell forced to delay a vote on the revised health care bill after senator john mccain had surgery to remove a blood clot. with mccain out for at least a week, republicans won't have the 50 votes they need and there's another delay, the congressional budget office will not release its analysis of the bill today as initially planned. and more now on senator mccain's condition. that blood clot was removed from above his eye, and doctors in phoenix say he's recovering well

at home, but some neurosurgeons not involved in mccain's treatment tell "the new york times" his condition and the recovery period could be longer, up to several weeks, and they say a blood clot in that area is usually very concerning. mccain is 80 years old. he has a history of melanoma. now, pathology reports are expected back in several days. the united states is calling for the release of all americans unjustly detained in iran after a ten-year prison sentence was handed down to a chinese-american citizen. the 37-year-old princeton grad is accused of infiltrating iran. the state department accused tehran of continuing to detain foreigners on false charges. there are a number of wildfires that are burning in california. the whittier fire near santa barbara is one of the biggest out there. crews are setting off intentional fires to burn off grass and try to keep the fire from spreading. the whittier fire has already destroyed 17 homes, grown to more than 18,000 acres. two big fires to the north have also forced residents to

evacuate. and there are now nearly 50 active large wildfires burning in more than a dozen western states, and you can see the pattern that's creating it. red flag warnings are up for parts of the west, and those high temperatures are now shifting to the east. lightning from the thunderstorms in the mountains could spark new fires. and now for a look at the monday forecast. good morning. summer thunderstorms in the four corners region, specifically southern portions of arizona, southern portions of arizona, a heavy thunderstorm causing concern for dangerous flooding. that's going to affect flagstaff, phoenix down towards tucson. complicating matters along i-17, 10 and 40, urban flash flooding, sudden flooding of desert washes and blowing dust in the desert. flooding not only a concern there but in the southeast with steamy flow from the carolinas down to the gulf coast. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams.

well, this morning hollywood is mourning the loss of acting legend martin landau. the academy award-winning actor died in los angeles. his career spanning 70 years including notable roles on tv and movies. landau was perhaps best known for his role on the tv series "mission: impossible." >> he won a best supporting oscar for his portrayal of bela lugosi in "ed wood." martin landau, 80 years old. we'll have more on his remarkable career a little later on. but still ahead, wall street getting set for another opening with major averages at record levels. and an incredible scene from st. louis. how that suv ended up on the roof of a house. and "game of thrones" returned. it had twitter going crazy overnight and did some damage online as well. really. mom was diagnosed with alzheimer's at 58 years old. for me, it was heart-wrenching. bea: it takes a toll on everyone. i mean, it's a depressing disease to watch unfold before your eyes.

take a look at this scene in st. louis. witnesses say a speeding suv jumped a curb and landed on the roof of a house. the driver was stuck for an hour. he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. and an incredible survival story, in the meantime, in orlando following this freak accident on the highway. a 7,000-pound pipe fell on top of a minivan. the driver only suffered a cut on his forehead and received a few stitches. >> amazing. well, the four young men whose bodies were found in philadelphia last week were remembered last night. more than 1,500 community members, family and friends held a vigil in their memory. also last night, grim details from the grandparents of one of the victims. they reveal the other three families helped investigators find the fourth body by agreeing to go along with the plea deal for the suspect if he'd reveal where that body was. minneapolis residents want

answers after an australian immigrant was shot and killed by police. there was a vigil last night for justine damond. she was killed by police responding to a possible assault near her home. investigators say the officers' body cameras were not turned on as is required in such encounters. damond was reportedly engaged to be married next month. chicago is mourning the loss of a dedicated community leader. william "willie" cooper was among ten people shot to death over the weekend. ten people shot to death in that city over the weekend. cooper was gunned down less than a block away from the nonprofit that he ran. police are searching for a suspect. a 9-year-old boy was also killed by a drive-by shooting. nearly 40 others were injured in a bloody weekend in chicago. the financial markets open this week on a big roll. the dow working on three straight record closes. the index finished up 84 at 21, 637. the s&p 500 trying to build on a

northern plains but wet roads could be a problem for the entire southeast and west virginia into new england. >> weather-related airport delays possible in phoenix, new orleans and houston. on to something that is trending or viral. commentator ann coulter not too pleased with delta airlines. she's downright irate, and the feeling appears to be mutual. >> okay, so coulter went into a twitter tirade after what she says was an unexplained seat change over the weekend. she also tweeted a photo of the woman she was switched with and labeled delta the worst airline in america. delta called her series of angry tweets an attack on its workers and passengers and said it was unacceptable and unnecessary. the airline did, however, offer her $30 for the seat change. >> ouch. >> but it was fun to watch just sitting there through popcorn and watch them go at it. anyways some families are back home after that massive sinkhole swallowed two homes in their neighborhood near tampa. it really resembles more of a lake. it's now two-thirds the length of a football field, 230 feet

wide, 50 feet deep, and it has, thankfully, stopped growing. >> at least five homes in the land o' lakes neighborhood remain evacuated. officials say the cleanup will take months. >> the recovery portion of this is going to start involving the hazmat cleanup, and i say hazmat cleanup because there are chemicals in the water. there are septic tanks in this water. >> i'll probably want to leave but who is going to buy a house if you're next door to a sinkhole. >> good point. that sinkhole opened up where a previous sinkhole had been stabilized in the past. fortunately no injuries have been reported. and you know what, caitlin jenner says she's considering a career in politics. the transgender activist and former reality show star is weighing a u.s. senate run in california joining the likes of kid rock. jenner told a new york city radio station she'll decide in about six months. the 67-year-old is a lifelong republican. a run in 2018 could put her against senator dianne feinstein. a teenage girl escaped a

4:27 in the morning. welcome to monday, july 17th. >> we have a major incident in south san francisco. >> a deadly collision. all lanes of southbound 101 are fully closed in the brisbane area. the actual closure is at oyster point. you can see the purplic that means, yeah, all lanes are closed. this is a sig alert. crash happened a little after 4:00 this morning. investigators are on the scene, and any time we have a fatality involved, they have to do long-term investigation as well. right now, you're diverted off at oyster point. the oyster point on-ramp is closed as well. at this early hour, alternates are looking great. el camino real. or 280 wide open at the moment. let's check in with mike. >> thank you very much.

hi, everybody. after that weekend, you're probably wondering, is there relief on the way? there is for some of us. here's a look at doppler 7. you can see a 21-mile-per-hour wind at fairfield. the breeze is developing. 60s and 70s through 7:00. by the time we get to noon, 60s and 70s around the way, 70s and 80s inland, 90s around antioch. by 4:00, 70s around the bay. 80s to 90s inland. and then by 7:00, some fog along the coast. the rest of us still sunny. 60s to 80s. take a look at cooler conditions coming up. let's get to natasha for news. >> b.a.r.t. police have arrested three teenage s suspected of punching a person and trying to take their cell phone. it happened last night at the b.a.r.t. station. it happened on the platform level and trains sdid have to stop running for about a half hour while officers made the arrests. three have been taken to juvenile hall. >> firefighters battling 13 wildfires across california hope some cooler weather over the next few days are going to give them the boost.

a red flag warning issued by the gnash weather service expired last night at 9:00. firefighters were concerned anything could stark a wildfire like this one in ventura county. a car went off the highway and sparked a fast moving wildfire. air tankers were called in quickly to douse the flames. >> firefighters in san jose are investigating what caused a car fire on sierra road. it quickly spread to the nearby brush. it was spotted around 4:00 yesterday morning. two acres burned before fire crews got the fire under control. investigators don't know if the car caught fire before the fire startedory if it was started after. people in lake county are feeling the impact of a new wildfire that broke out. it's miled away, though. the great fire broke out around 3:00 yesterday afternoon, and within hours, lake county dispatch was getting calls about smoke. the great fire has burned 1,000 acres near highways 101 and 20. it's just 10% contained this morning. >> happening today, work finally

begans to repair a year-old sinkhole breaking the bank in one town. drivers in moraga have suffered delays since the sinkhole opened last year. part of the job includes replacing an eight-foot culvert under the busy intersection. moraga has already spent millions on the sinkhole, which has forced town leaders to declare a fiscal emergency. two lanes will be closed until october. and a key road in contra costa county will be closed for the next three months starting this morning. it's going to shut down at 7:00 creek road. so crews can work on storm related repairs. a detour has been set up for locals only through the march creek detention facility. when repairs are done, there will be retaining walls, new drainage and a new water main. >> we're learning more this morning about the victims caught
